How To Get Rid Of Skunk Smell

The most effective home remedy for skunk odor is a mixture of 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon liquid soap (preferably dish soap). This solution breaks up the oily compounds in skunk spray and neutralizes the odor-causing thiols[1][2][3][4][5][6].

To use the solution:

  • Mix the ingredients in an open container just before use; do not store the mixture as it can build up pressure and explode[2][4][5].
  • Wear rubber gloves. Wet the affected fur, then lather the solution into the fur and around the claws. Avoid contact with eyes and mouth. If the spray got into the eyes, rinse with plain water or saline[1][3][6].
  • Let the mixture sit for no more than 5–10 minutes (hydrogen peroxide can bleach fur)[4][5][6], then rinse thoroughly with tap water.
  • Repeat if necessary, then bathe your pet as normal to remove any residue[4][5][6].

For clothes and washable fabrics, launder with detergent and 1/2 cup of baking soda in hot water, then air dry (do not use a dryer until the odor is completely gone). Delicate fabrics should be soaked in baking soda and detergent solution before rinsing and air drying[4][5]. For non-washable items, air them out outdoors—ventilation and time will eventually reduce the odor[2].

Commercial products like Nature’s Miracle Skunk Odor Remover and Skunk-Off® are also available and may help with persistent odors in pets, carpets, and upholstery[2][4].

Do not use tomato juice, beer, oatmeal, or similar folklore remedies—they are ineffective at neutralizing skunk odor and only temporarily mask the smell[6].
