Get Rid Of Fruit Flies

Fruit flies can be a persistent nuisance, but with a combination of cleaning habits and homemade traps, you can eliminate them effectively. Here are proven methods:

  • Funnel Trap: Use a small jar or cup with a narrow opening. Pour a little apple cider vinegar (or old beer or wine) into the bottom. Create a paper funnel with a small opening and tape it in place at the jar’s opening. Fruit flies enter in search of the scent but struggle to find their way out. Optional: once the trap is full, take it outside and release the flies[1].
  • Bowl Trap: Fill a small bowl with apple cider vinegar, add a few drops of dish soap, and a splash of water. Place the bowl where flies gather. The vinegar attracts them, and the soap breaks surface tension, so they drown. Replace the solution every few days for best results[3].
  • Plastic Wrap Trap: Add apple cider vinegar or overripe fruit to a jar or bowl. Cover with plastic wrap, secure with a rubber band, and poke small holes with a toothpick. Flies enter for the scent but can’t escape[3].
  • Rotten Fruit Trap: Place bits of overripe fruit in a disposable container, cover with plastic wrap, and poke holes in the top. Position it near problem areas. Dispose of the container and flies when full; repeat as needed[6].
  • Wine Trap: Pour leftover red wine (or beer) with a few drops of dish soap into a container. Cover with plastic wrap, poke holes, and set nearby. The scent lures flies, and the wine-soap mixture traps them[6].
  • Natural Repellents: Scents like lemongrass, lavender, cedar wood, or basil can help deter fruit flies. Use essential oils mixed with water in a spray bottle, set out cedar chips, or keep a basil plant in your kitchen[7].

Prevention Tips:

  • Store produce in the refrigerator when possible, especially if fruit has been cut or is overripe[2].
  • Take out garbage and recycling frequently, and clean bins to remove residue[2].
  • Clean drains and sink areas regularly to remove food buildup. Compost food scraps in a sealed bag in the freezer until disposal to prevent egg hatching[2].
  • Wipe down counters and avoid leaving opened food out[6].
