Gnats are a common nuisance, particularly around houseplants and damp soil. To effectively get rid of them, a combination of prevention and targeted treatments works best.
Reduce Moisture[2][4][5]
- Let the top couple of inches of soil dry between watering to make the environment less hospitable for gnats.
- Provide proper drainage for your plants and avoid overwatering.
Check and Isolate New Plants[4]
- Inspect new plants for gnats or larvae before bringing them home.
- Wash down new plants and isolate them for a month to catch any hidden infestations.
Physical Traps[3][5][7]
- Use yellow sticky traps in plant pots to catch adult gnats.
- Make DIY traps with apple cider vinegar and a drop of dish soap in a cup covered with plastic wrap (poke holes so gnats can enter).
- Place raw potato slices just under the soil surface; larvae will be attracted to the potato, which you can then discard after a few hours.
Natural Treatments[1][5]
- Chamomile tea: Brew strong tea, dilute with water, and use it to water your plants.
- Cinnamon: Sprinkle ground cinnamon on soil surface for its antifungal properties.
Sanitize Drains and Soil[3][6]
- Pour boiling water, diluted bleach, or a mixture of salt, baking soda, and vinegar down affected drains to kill gnats breeding there.
- If starting new plants, pre-moisten soil with boiling water to kill any larvae before use.
Biological Control and Barriers[5][7]
- Use products like Mozzie Bits (Bti) or beneficial nematodes for large infestations.
- Sprinkle a physical gnat barrier, like abrasive pumice granules, over the soil to prevent adults from reaching the soil to lay eggs.
By combining these methods, you can disrupt the gnats’ life cycle and significantly reduce or eliminate infestations.
