There are several effective methods to help get rid of vertigo, depending on the cause. The most common cause is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), which can often be managed with specific head and body movements, lifestyle adjustments, and some home remedies.
-
Epley Maneuver:
- Sit on the edge of your bed and turn your head 45 degrees toward the side causing vertigo.
- Quickly lie back with your head on a pillow so it’s slightly extended and still turned. Wait 30 seconds.
- Turn your head 90 degrees to the opposite side, without lifting it. Wait 30 seconds.
- Turn your head and body another 90 degrees, so you’re almost facing the floor. Wait 30 seconds.
- Slowly sit up and remain there for a few minutes.
- Repeat these steps in reverse if your right ear is affected instead of your left. Perform the maneuver three times each night until you’ve been free of vertigo for 24 hours.

Semont Maneuver:
- Sit on the edge of your bed and turn your head 45 degrees away from the side causing vertigo.
- Quickly lie down on your unaffected side and stay there for 30 seconds.
- Without changing your head’s direction, quickly move to lie down on your other side and look at the floor for another 30 seconds.
- Return to a sitting position and wait a few minutes. Repeat three times daily until symptom-free for 24 hours.

Gufoni Maneuver:
- If vertigo worsens when you turn toward the unaffected ear: sit, then rapidly lie down toward the affected side and hold for 1–2 minutes, then turn your head 45 degrees toward the ceiling for two minutes before sitting upright.
- If vertigo worsens toward the affected ear, do the opposite side. This provides quick relief in certain types of positional vertigo.

Half-somersault Maneuver:
- Kneel and tilt your head up to the ceiling, then place your head upside down as if starting a somersault. Tuck in your chin toward your knees and turn your head toward the affected ear. Hold each position for about 30 seconds.
- This maneuver is especially useful if you know which ear is affected and may be more comfortable than the Epley in some cases.

Additional Home Remedies:
- Rest in a quiet, dark room with your eyes closed to relieve symptoms if vertigo strikes suddenly.
- Move your head carefully and slowly when doing daily activities to avoid triggering vertigo.
- Stay hydrated and get adequate sleep; dehydration and fatigue can worsen vertigo.
- Consider vitamin D supplements if you have a deficiency, as low vitamin D can contribute to certain types of vertigo.
- Acupressure and ginger tea have shown some benefit for symptom relief and wellness.
- Over-the-counter antihistamines can sometimes help, particularly if vertigo is linked to inner ear problems or fluid buildup.

If your vertigo is severe, persists for more than a few days, or is accompanied by numbness, vision changes, hearing loss, or severe headache, you should see a doctor immediately, as these could be signs of a more serious underlying condition.
